Another week, another team takes a crack at undefeated
Big Water (5-0). This time, the Titans played a brilliant first half for the
lead, 36-31. The second half was another tale as Big Water made their run behind
Gary Tran's 17 points, 24 for the game. Jason Lee added 17 and Quinn Wong played
his best game of the season with 12 points, 5 rebounds, and 3 assists.
Henry Chow and Benny Chau led the Titans with 15 points apiece.
Allen Hong chipped in with 11 points. James Sun, the usual double-double, was
held to 9 points and 8 rebounds.
4 on 5 is a no-brainer but a close one
Gliders 32-28 60
Runners 26-26 52
After an innitial delay for late-comers, the Runners had 4 and it nearly worked
as Linh Lam led the way with 18 points and Vita Yee with a huge double-double,
12 points and 20 rebounds.
Looking to end their winless streak, the Gliders jumped on a quick start to
end the 1st half in a high scoring affair, 32- 26. Kimily Louie made 5 three
pointers to total 17 first half points. Irene Wong and Linh Lam countered for
the Runners with a combined 17 points.
After a lackluster second half, the Runners made a run and were within 4 points
with lots of time remaining. Yee's strong play on both sides of the court led
to quick and easy shots for the Runners. As expected, the Runners ran out of
gas and resorted to long 3’s and quick fouls to catch-up. This time, the
Gliders were able to nail their free throws to secure their first win.
Anna Wong continued her dominant presence as she collected 25 points, 12 rebounds,
6 assists, and 4 steals.
Mighties fall, again
Skyrockets 36-18 65
Mighties 29-27 62
Down the entire game, the Mighties continued their sluggish play but was able
to put together a run to tie the game up. With under a minute left, the Mighties
had two possessions to go-ahead: Mark Huynh (15 pts, 6 rebs, 3 stls) took a
jumper down the lane that didn't look good from the get-go and Brad Chang (10
pts) took a three pointer that looked good but rolled out.
In overtime, Aaron Tom (13 pts, 12 rebs) grabbed a crucial rebound over Huynh's
head to allow Darren Tran (10 pts, 7 stls) to nail a three pointer to give the
Skyrockets the lead for good. The Mighties fought hard but time ran out to give
the Skyrockets the victory, their first of the season.
Jeremy Lee led all scorers with 27. And grabbed a season-high 17 rebounds.
Brad Chang completed a double-double with 10 rebounds. For the Skyrockets, Steve
Lee and Rayfil Wong scored 13 and 10 apiece.
The Skyrockets controlled the boards behind Wong's team-high 14 rebounds. Neil
Wong and Tom had 13 and 12 respectively.
Battle of the big bodies
Juggernauts 21-28 49
All-Stars 16-27 43
The lowest scoring team in the league, once again, finds a way to win. Dubbed
as "the Big Body Bash", this game featured a few "juggernauts"
of it's own; 6'4" Bret Knobelauch, 6'2" Kingston Louie. These 200-pounders
went at it and Knobelauch won the rebounding bout with 15 and threw in 4 blocks.
Louie won the scoring bout with 7 points. All in all, it was earth-shaking,
physical, and sweaty.
Despite a comfortable 7 point lead throughout, the Juggernauts watched their
lead dwindle down to 2 as Louie hit a crucial three pointer and Newton Wong
(9 pts, 8 rebs) went to work down low. But Duane Leong's 13 second half points
were a bit too much as the Jugheads made a quick run to close out the game.
The "X-Factor", Denny Lee, returned to score 10 points. Phuong Hong
had his worst game of the season but was able to score 4 points, grab 6 rebounds,
and dish out 5 assists.
Stat of the game: No All-Star player scored in double
figures but 4 players did score 9 points.
